‘This male banded demoiselle was flying over a stream in Horst in The Netherlands, trying to find a mate. I was standing on a bridge over the water, so to get a good shot of him I needed to use a telezoom. At first I found it annoying that I didn’t have a polariser that fitted the lens and would prevent the plants from being seen underneath the surface of the water. However, I soon noticed that this omission helped the damselfly to stand out. The image has an attractive flat appearance, and the plants create a frame around the insect. The reflection completes the shot. I took a lot of pictures and this is the only one where the male spread its wings.’
