‘Springtails are extremely photogenic and can often be seen during the autumn/winter period when many other insects disappear – this makes them ideal subjects for macro photography out of season. This specimen was photographed in my garden in northern France on a petal on the ground.

To achieve an image like this you need to wait until the springtail is in a favourable position, preferably in profile, at the top end of the petal. Once it’s there you have to act fast, firing away while focusing manually. This particular springtail only remained in this position for a few seconds.’
