‘It was a hot July day, and I had spent the entire morning photographing butterflies. As I sat down in a clearing to load my equipment into my backpack I noticed some movement in the tall, dry grass nearby. Looking more closely, I was surprised to see a huge colony of recently-born grasshopper larvae (Acrida bicolor). When they saw me coming, they froze on the blades of grass, trying to disguise themselves. If anyone had seen me they’d have thought I was crazy lying on the grass and laughing alone, but it was impossible not to be amused by these cartoon characters! With a smile on my face I unpacked my gear, took a few shots and quickly left so as not to disturb them.’
